Job Description: Social Media & Outreach Intern 

About us: The Metropolitan Environmental Trust (The M.e.t.) is a non-profit governmental trust that promotes environmental responsibility by providing environmental education to the public and hosting awareness and special collection events. It also collaborates with member communities to develop, deliver, and support environmental programs and services that follow regulatory compliance, teach sound environmental practices, and reduce the solid waste stream. 

Summary: We are seeking a part-time Social Media and Outreach Intern to join the M.e.t.’s team. You will be in charge of content creation and management for our social channels (Instagram, Facebook and Twitter) and websites (www.metrecycle.com and www.recyclethistulsa.com) as well outreach to media outlets, donors, and organizations. The Social Media and Outreach Intern will play a crucial role in expanding the M.e.t.’s presence and community and facilitating outreach and education around topics of recycling, composting, and sustainability. An ideal candidate has experience with communications, story-telling and social media management and is passionate about sustainability and the environment. We are a small team so an ideal candidate will be able to work both independently and collaboratively. The position will be on a contractor basis. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Public relations: Communicate with donors and the media to represent the organization through press releases, brochures, social media, email campaigns, and attending and photographing community events. Assisting in the development and dissemination of marketing and PR materials. 
  • Research: Collect data and information to focus on the donors, events, and venues that may be useful.  
  • Administrative duties: Work with the Office Manager to coordinate events and volunteers in addition to routine office work. Analyze field & financial data to better understand our performance. 
  • Social media & websites: Scheduling and posting to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, checking messages, responding to comments, online engagement with relevant conversations as well as allied organizations and networks, updating websites.
  • Content creation: Copywriting, photo editing, graphic design. 
  • Educational support: Assist and support the Educational Outreach Manager in planning and facilitating lessons for pre-K – 6th grade students. 
  • Analytics: Social media reporting. 

Skills and Qualifications: 

  • Experience with social media creation and management.
  • Interested and passionate about the environment and sustainability. 
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment. 
  • Strong independent decision-making, organizational, planning and problem-solving skills. 
  • Good written and oral English skills, Spanish language skills are a bonus.
  • Knowledge of Wordpress, web-based email marketing platforms, and Microsoft Office (preferred). 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with media contacts. 
  • At least a sophomore in a relevant major, such as Environmental Policy, Communications, Marketing, or Political Science.
  • Must be able to work occasionally on weekends for events.
